Planting Seasons
Spring Planting
Due to weather and soil conditions, the spring planting season generally starts as soon as the frost leaves the ground, usually around April 15th, and continues for about four weeks.
Fall Planting.
Fall planting, for most planters in our shipping area, should be considered to be late summer or early fall. The best time in most of New England is late August to mid-September and about a month later in southern New Jersey, for example. This timing allows for the seedlings and transplants to become established and for some root growth to take place before the coldest part of winter sets in. If the trees are planted too late for your area, the looser soil right around the plants may freeze more rapidly than the surrounding undisturbed soil and heave the plant out of the ground.
That said, there are some definite advantages to planting in the fall. For one thing, there's usually more time to do it, without the pressures of other spring projects. This is especially true for those of us in the north who have very short planting seasons. Also, the root growth that takes place in the fall gives the plants a head start on growth the following spring. For these reasons, fall planting is worth your consideration, if you have the right soil and/or climate conditions.
Handling and Planting Your Newly Arrived Stock
Over the years a question often arises, "What do I do with my shipped plant material upon receipt and how long will the plants stay viable in the box?" The issue of shipped plant viability is still frequently overlooked with less than desirable consequences often resulting. Addressing this concern, we would first like to offer that "an ounce of prevention" would make you a happier customer.
"Have you ever seen your baggage being loaded at the airport?" Never assume that your plants are being handled with TLC during shipment. We hope that the "perishable" and "this side up" warnings pre-printed on every Western Maine Nurseries box are being observed in transit, but experience tells us otherwise. It is extremely important that regardless of the type of plant material you have ordered, to always unpack and inspect the contents of every box immediately upon arrival. Contact our office at 800.447.4745 as soon as possible and report any problems you encounter. The sooner we know of a problem, the faster we can react to correct it.
